Welcome!

Hello Everyone…and thank you for visiting my part of the world. It’s a cluttered world, to be sure, but most of the clutter comes from fabric, yarn, ribbons, thread, how-to books, and far too many works-in-progress. It’s a world of discovery and experimentation…of successes and failures (including many that end up in the trash)…all of which have one central theme: sewing.

I’ve been sewing since the age of 10. My mother taught me how to steer her old Singer so that I could help hem crib sheets for my younger siblings. Two years in West Virginia 4H taught me how to stitch by hand, read a pattern, and construct my junior-high wardrobe. My first years in Boston taught me how to shop the garment district for high quality remnants and designer textiles that were literally a cut above the fabrics being used for department store ready-to-wear. My years as a lifestyle editor and writer introduced me to Issey Miyake and Bill Blass, Perry Ellis and Willi Smith. And my years as an at-home mom (all the while working as a writer to make sure I’d be home when my kids walked through the door) taught me how to work fast. Really fast.

Today, my kids are about ready to leave the nest, and I continue to juggle family, work, and my sewing passion. Loom&Essence is my oasis and my launching pad for new creative adventures. I invite you to explore this site and our Loom&Essence home page, and to join me on one of my many colorful journeys.

Cheers…

Kate Broughton, Amesbury MASSACHUSETTS
